Requirements for Buying a Laptop for College
As more and more college and university classes become more technologically oriented (and some even requiring laptops as part of the curriculum), it is becoming more critical for students to have a laptop for college. With so many brands and models of laptop computers available to purchase, it can be difficult to decide what to purchase for a college student, especially if you don’t know much about computers.
Weight Considerations
If a college student is carrying her laptop computer around wherever she goes, she is likely to want a computer that is as lightweight as possible. While extremely lightweight laptop computers can be expensive, depending on how long the college student plans to use the computer, it can be worth the extra expense to purchase a lightweight computer.
Cost Considerations
College students who carry their laptops everywhere can take advantage of low-cost laptops for several reasons. Low-cost laptops are easier to replace if they are broken, lost or stolen. Low-cost laptops also allow the college student or his parents (or whoever is paying the bill for purchasing the computer) to have more money available to devote to other school expenses. However, low-cost laptops may not be able to run required software due to their speed disadvantages compared to higher-cost laptops.
Compatibility
Some universities and colleges have programs that use certain types of computers due to the specialized software available on them. For example, a university or college that offers programs in media design might require students to use Mac laptops due to the media editing software available for Macs. Engineering or technical colleges and universities might require laptops that run the Windows operating system so that students can use technical programs that are often written for the Windows operating system.
Types of Note-Taking
If a student is taking a lot of handwritten notes, a tablet or convertible laptop computer can be a great choice as it allows her to both type and write on the computer, so they can take notes for a wide variety of classes. While tablet or convertible computers can be helpful in a college environment, they are often pricey compared to regular laptop computers.
